Edie Cherry was educated at Rice University in Houston, TX. She completed her architectural internship at Caudill Rowlett Scott where she worked for seven years for her former professor, Bill Caudill. She was the first woman to be elected an Associate in the firm. Edie moved to Albuquerque in 1972 to teach architecture at the University of New Mexico (UNM), where she taught design studio, programming, and historic preservation. She held administrative positions including Acting Dean and Director of Architecture and became Professor Emerita in 2008.
Edie and Jim See, her husband, started Cherry/See Architects, now Cherry/See/Reames Architects, in 1977 and was with the firm part time while teaching at UNM. In 2000, she joined the firm full time and has concentrated on architectural programming, planning, historic preservation and landscape planning. She has authored several publications on programming including a text book, Programming for Design, From Theory to Practice, and the chapter on programming in the 2008, The Architect’s Handbook of Professional Practice, published by the AIA. Edie is a fellow in the AIA and a licensed landscape architect.
In 2009, Edie received the Albuquerque American Institute of Architects Lifetime Achievement Award for her accomplishments and dedication to the profession.
