Thomas Bell Community Center Gymnasium Addition

Date of Completion: 2009

Building Area:
8,355 gross square feet

Contractor:
Longhorn Construction Services, Inc.

The neighborhood near the Thomas Bell Community Center in Albuquerque, had long awaited a gymnasium addition. The site, south of Kirtland Park, was very narrow and sloped down to the west of the existing center at 17%. The design solution made use of the slope for the two story volume of the gym with a balcony and support spaces at the level of the original center.

The project includes solar panel heating for hot water, reclaimed water from showers and lavatories to flush toilets, daylighting that requires no artificial lighting during the day and other features aimed at LEED Gold Certification. There is a 44.3% water use reduction and 48.8% emerging savings over the standard bench marks.
