At Zia Elementary School, we met several times with the Building Committee to reach an understanding of the image they had in mind for this phase of the campus development.  The Master Plan created by Mahlman and Miles Architects identified the site along the Monroe Street edge of the campus.  The Building Committee wanted the new facility to blend with the existing structures in terms of scale, materials, and colors, and they expressed a strong desire to have plenty of natural light in the classrooms.

Our design strategy included providing two new structures with varied massing on the exteriors and generous fenestration.  We were able to provide daylight for all classrooms from multiple directions to reduce the problem of glare.  Each classroom has its own entry door going directly to the play yard, as well as an emergency door on the opposite façade.
