The Santa Barbara School is located in the historic Santa Barbara/Martineztown Neighborhood. This former Albuquerque Public School facility was abandoned in 1986. While vacant, the building deteriorated and was heavily vandalized. Walls were covered with graffiti, serious roof leaks damaged some adobe walls and oak floors, and a fire damaged one classroom and the roof above. Due to the efforts of the Martineztown/Santa Barbara neighborhood associations, the City of Albuquerque purchased the property. Working for the City of Albuquerque Housing Authority, Cherry/See Architects remodeled the old school into Senior Citizen Apartments and a Community Center.
