This dramatic site in the Sandia Foothills was the major form provider for this 1,700 square foot residence. The sloping site has a panoramic view of the Rio Grande Valley and the City of Albuquerque to the South, and a breathtaking view directly up the Sandia Mountains to the North.
The challenge the site presented was how to capture both views while providing direct solar gain. In addition, the house had to cascade down a 10 to 12 foot slope. This challenge is addressed with a narrow roof plane which slopes in two directions - to the west and south - paralleling the slope of the site.
The view to the north was preserved by buying the garage so that the nearest peak could be seen from the living room. This large window and another in the master bedroom capture the view, while all the other openings to the north are a bare minimum. The master bedroom, living room an dining area take in the view of the valley as well. The thinness of the house allows for it to be cooled by cross ventilation. Heating is provided by direct solar gain in the daytime, and stored heat in the evening. The storage is located below the south windows preserving the view of the valley. Fans deliver the stored heat to the north wall under the floor. Auxiliary heat is provided by radiant panels in the ceiling.
